Butterfly effect

The butterfly effect is a term used in physics that represents how small variations in the initial conditions produce large differences in a later state.

“Does the flap of a butterfly’s wings in Brazil set off a tornado in Texas?” was the title of Edward Lorenz talk in 1972.

We were discussing with a friend some days ago, thinking about this statement, and telling ourselves that we cannot just sit a watch what happens to women in Afghanistan.

At first, as I watched the news of the return of Taliban, I was so shocked, overwhelmed that I was feeling totally helpless in front of those images. The problem seems so big that it would be much easier to turn on the other side and try not to think about it.

But especially us, women, we cannot turn our back to other women who do not have the same luck we had. So, if the butterfly effect is true, than perhaps a small gesture, an action or an initiative that seems nothing compared to the extent of the problem today, will generate a positive impact in the long term. Maybe if each of us does something, even a small little thing, we can really help those women who are so brave to be into the street to manifest and say no to that men who wants them cancelled from the society life.

Here, in our comfortable old Europe, where women struggle to play a role in the political and corporate high level leadership, we often forget what has been achieved in the last fifty years as rights. We all have a moral duty, especially if we belong to that group of fortunate people who have studied and realized their lives, to support other women who have simply had the misfortune of being born in the wrong place.

So I started doing something. It was easy, just opening google and typing “how to help Afghan women” and found the most proper initiative.

The world changes one person at a time, is just important to take the first step. Don’t hesitate.
